I love Saint Patrick’s Day! In this house we go big and celebrate by a visit for our naughty leprechaun, Sheamus. He has been visiting the O’Leary house for a very long time. Sheamus is full of fun tricks and treats. He has done a lot of fun things over the years.
A few highlights over the years:
We have even tried to leave cookies as peace offerings, but then Sheamus would turn them green. He was always a sneaky one. Except there was a big difference this year. My kids know and told me not to do anything. I was kind of like, “ok” they are getting to old. So, I didn’t do much, we have our green shirts on and the green Lucky Charms cereal on the table. No big hoorah. They have outgrown it. So today, I am excited to celebrate Saint Patrick. But I am sad that our tradition has changed! Next year, I will change it up to match their personalities and keep a little of the old… we will see what next year brings!

Ohhhh, no! I'm so sad they didn't want to do it anymore! :-( My 5yo did a leprechaun trap for the first time this year and we left her little treats from the leprechaun every night, and it was so much fun! (When I was a kid, I just kept pretending about all the magical creatures so we could keep doing them, and I kinda hope my kids will do that!) But I also love that you are thinking of what new traditions you might start now!

I hate that they are getting older and their excitement diminishes. I hope they will be open to the revised traditions next year. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you and your boys (Janet, too)!

This is such a bittersweet post! I, on the other hand, not being Irish, nor having ever celebrated St. Patty's Day in the least, was totally caught unawares by my kindergartener coming home asking why the leprechaun didn't visit our house and turn all our water green...

Yes that is tricky when the school does something that you don't celebrate!!

Glad they had the green Lucky Charms for breakfast. I know you will come up with something clever for them next year.
